VP's men let him down February-March 2012

How VP's henchmen are writing
his political obituary ahead of poll

THE much touted prayer-cum-political rally
in Machakos and attended by four leading
G7 presidential aspirants could turn out to
be the VP’s Water Loo.

It presented a clear opportunity for the vicepresident to internalize the political framework
he has been operating within since he selfishly
agreed to become Mwai Kibaki’s understudy in
a stolen election.
Everything was probably wrong on that
day. Organizers of the event had somehow
realized that there would be no crowds. So they
mobilized school busses to carry supporters to
Kenyatta Stadium. Matatus from all the districts
ferried more others who were paid to attend.
Makadara MP Mike Sonko and George Waititu
from Embakasi brought bus loads of supporters.
By the time the meeting kicked off, Machakos
residents were a little fraction of the crowd.
The leaders were to gather at Panari Hotel
along Mombasa Road and travel  in a convoy to
Machakos, greeting crowds along the way. But
that did not happen. Kalonzo waited till he could
not see his colleagues and he hit the road early.
As he reached Machakos Town, his compatriots
were glued to their seats at KICC where Raphael
Tuju was launching his Presidential bid under
POA.
To kill the time, the VP achieved what has
never been done... becoming the First Vice
President of Kenya to parade his flag along Rashid
Road in Machakos Majengo area to acknowledge
greetings.
Kalonzo literally welcomed Uhuru, Ruto and
Mike Sonko when they did eventually turn up at
the dais. Even then his detractors seemed to have
a better side of the planning, They ensured that
the placed somewhat hostile youth just in front of
the dais. They had a job to do. As Kalonzo spoke,
they kept on chanting Mutula Kilonzo’s name and
demanding that the VP states what he planned
to do over the Justice Minister’s utterances that
Uhuru and Ruto were ineligible to vie for the
presidency because they are Hague bound.
Kalonzo avoided the debate even after
members of the public insisted that he declares
his position. Eventually, he was non committal
on taking any action. Earlier  Kalonzo mps led
by Mwingi South MP and assistant David Musila
threatened to walk out of the meeting if Uhuru
and Ruto MPs Insisted on Mutula’s sacking.
Kalonzo had arrived three hours ahead of the
two Ocampo suspects. They were later air-lifted
to Machakos as speeches were on. According to
Uhuru and Ruto handlers Kalonzo was expected
to make a clear declaration on the fate of his party
Secretary General who also is the Minister for
Justice and Constitutional Affairs .
But what ruffled the feathers over Kalonzo’s
fate in G7 were careless utterances made by his
ally and Kangundo MP Johnstone Muthama to
the effect that he was to benefit on the suspects’
tribulations with ICC. Muthama is quoted as
saying in Kikamba “Tukeka aali nikana Kuuya
kweekwaa ali twikaali mungi nikana nake
ekaali” translated to mean “we are waiting for ICC
to do it part and then we vote Kalonzo so he can
take over.” Ideally, the term- Kwika Aali- means to do
something. Indeed, it is a loaded way of saying things
you do not want to pronounce. It may mean going to
the Hague or co-operation or even fighting. So when
Kalonzo’s colleagues took offence of the remarks,
Muthama was wholly to blame as the words could
have been interpreted either way. Going by the old
dictum- that the Guilty are always afraid- The Hague
suspects did not belabour to append a meaning to
what Muthama was saying that seemed to amuse
the crowd.
Those who know Muthama believe that if he
meant that the three leaders should unite, did he
did not have to use the phrase in a crowd that did
not understand what he meant. Besides, Kalonzo
handlers have been loudly saying that if the Ruto-
Uhuru camp did not endorse Kalonzo, then Raila
would walk to State House.
Muthama has been using these encrypted
phrases since his election as MP to deliver insulting
remarks to Water Minister Charity Ngilu and Prime
Minister Raila Odinga but his choice of  expression
during the meeting was ill advised and shameless
as it has always been. Sadly, he takes it as a joke
whenever he uses the Kwika Aali remarks, even
when he is using the phrases in place of some
unprintable invective.
Muthama’s   utterances broke everything apart
to the effect that Kalonzo was warned by Juja MP
William KabogoUhuru ally not to attend the dinner
party hosted by Uhuru at Eagles restaurant in
Kitengela..Kalonzo chose to go to Maazoni along
Mombasa road to assess his performance of the day.
Even then Kalonzo’s speech left a lot to be
desired. Knowing that his two colleagues were facing
charges raging from Murder to rape, among others,
he specifically told the crowd that he was a clean man
who has never murdered or raped anyone- using
a Kikamba word for rape to drive home his point
The Machakos Municipal stadium was carefully
watched by Kalonzo friends and foes and it later
came to be the climax of a boiling point of mistrust
and suspicion. It cettainly was the smallest of the
rallies that the G7 team has been holding. Desides,
Uhuru and Ruto supporters were ferried from
outside Machakos to steal the show and where
placed near the dais to put across a certain political
agenda.
 Insiders indicated how Kalonzo reluctantly
contributed to finance the rally leaving Uhuru
and Ruto to spend more than planned. It is also
believed the duo had boycotted the rally only to
be convinced to attend by their allies.
At Eagle Hotel, the Muthama utterances were
translated by former VP aide Fred Muteti and
nominated Councillor James Keli. Put together
with Kalonzo’s Mr Clean claim, the missing links
of the bigger picture emerged, breathing to life
the  pre-existing mistrust to a bare knuckled
tackle on the Man from Tsiekuru.
It is here that Uhuru narrated his ordeal
and blamed it on Kalonzo. First he said the
choice of Justice Philip Waki to chair the team
t ha  t   inve s t  i ga  ted pos t  –pol  l  viol  enc e  wa  s
instigated by the VP with blessing of Mutula
and a conspiracy to lock the two was advanced.
The Ruto- Uhuru pair is also reported to
have dragged Justice Philip Waki on to target- to
work out some propaganda that he worked with
Mutula at the behest of Kalonzo and unleash a
long shot aimed at curtailing their dream to be
President of Kenya. The difference here is that
the two are not as noisy as they are on their
allegations that they were allegedly fixed by
Raila. Their claim on Waki is thus provoking
a view that the Akamba are being targeted by
the G7 kingpins.
I t   i s   c l a imed  Ka lonzo ,   th rough   fo rm e r
Machakos KANU chairman late Mulu Mutisya
lobbied for elevation of Philip Waki to be a High
Court Judge. Mutula is also believed to  have
been the best man in Waki’s wedding. Uhuru
narrated this with emotion and it was here
he decided to call quits his political marriage
with the vice president.  Many observers say
the Machakos rally was mismanaged from its
planning stages. The committee co-ordinating
t he   ra l  ly wa s   l  e s s   repre s ented  for   i t  only
consisted of elements in the Wiper Party that
has more loyalty to funds than Kalonzo’s dream
to march to State House.
Close sources indicate money meant for
mobilization was pocketed and the job of
ferrying people left to respective ODM-K MPs
some of whom showed no interest. Transport
was only provided by Principals of High Schools
who had donated the buses for free to Kalonzo
an act which later picked debate on the usage of
buses that parents bleed to death when buying.
It is understood the ministry of Education had
banned to use of them outside school activities
such as politics. Members of parliament left
their supporters hungry for the whole day and
were forced to leave a post-mortem meeting at
Lysak hotel to attend to the furious supporters.
Entertainment groups were neither spared
as out of twenty invited only three were paid
allowance late in the evening.
