Twist of Fate

By Anchor Reporter

WITH the entry of Mutula Kilonzo Junior in the race to succeed his father, the fate of Kethi Kilonzo in politics has been permanently sealed.

But observers are wondering why the CORD family has to plough back to the Mutula clan to find a successor for Mutula Kilonzo in Makueni politics.
This comes as the country enters the third month after his mysterious death. It is anyone’s guess when and  if the cause of Mutula’s death will ever be known. Suffice it to say that the time the family sought before they could reveal the results of postmortem was a diplomatic way to as Kenyans to mind their own business. This will in turn lead Kenyans to speculate whether the suspected poisonous substances found in his body was consistent with a poison administered by a second party or that it may have been self inflicted.  Well, this is a story for another day.
The truth is that for the Wiper party to present a challenge in the election, it has to be a Mutula candidate- not because they loved Mutula, but because of the magic he held-possibly into the future with the capacity to topple even Kalonzo Musyoka from the community leadership.
Other sheds of opinion believe that those digging into the Mutula family want to destroy Mutula-even in his death and ensure that he is vanquished. This may seem believable in the fact that the same unseen hands have torn his daughter of promise- Kethi – into smithereens. It will now have to take the hand of God or Presidential Prerogative of Mercy to save her neck from the hands of justice.
This seems to be what informs the position taken by Mutula’s  Brother in law- Chris Musau who opposes in involvement of any of the Mutula children or wife Nduku in politics. Chris, the Proprietor of Maanzoni Lodge told The Anchor that he  advised  the family to give politics a wide berth and concentrate on the businesses and firms left behind by the Mutula. ‘’ I have told them to leave politics to politicians and concentrate on the businesses Mulula left behind”, he said.
Now it is official that the clever lawyer daughter of Mutula Kilonzo was never a registered voter in the first place and questions must now be posed on what is left of her integrity. The IEBC Tribunal and  a Three Judge Bench of the High Court has  found that Kethi was ineligible to be presented as a candidate for Makueni Senatorial race.
Answers are now overdue as to why this so called brilliant daughter of Ukambani forgot where she allegedly registered as a voter, why she never voted for her father and who gave her the stolen slip she used to hoodwink the entire Makueni that she was a bonafide voter.
Indeed even as it is claimed that Jubilee may have been the cause of Kethi’s woes, questions must be asked why on the other hand  would Cord push Kethi to be candidate when, as it turned out, she is not qualified to be nominated as a candidate. Could Jubilee have scrapped her name from the register even before she became a candidate- or even before Kenya got to know her?
Prior to Kethi’s troubles mounted, there was no question that Makueni voters would ever take another Mutula other than Kethi. That is why the mere dream by Mutula’s widow Nduku that she would run was greeted with great disdain, forcing her to jettison her plans.
This was informed  by the fact that Kethi had distinguished herself within the Mutula clan that she had what it takes to succeed Mutula.  Ironically, Kethi made her name in a case she lost. And with the loss, she pierced into the hearts of Makueni people, blinding them in the process from  searching real values that make a leader.
Those at the time who dreamt that Mutula Jnr could make it were shunted aside- because  Makueni residents had not seen Junior in action- the fact that he worked along his father in the Mwaki Foundation notwithstanding.
Informed sources tell The Anchor that at first, Kethi was apprehensive not to appear to be toppling her elder brother and had herself wanted Junior to run instead. But when the public appeared to see him as unelectable at the time, he stepped back and Kethi  accepted, however reluctantly to hold the baton for the Wiper party.
With Junior’s candidature, it brings to fruition his long association with Mwaki Foundation- Mutula’s vehicle for social engagement in  Makueni and Mbooni in particular.
Unlike Kethi, Junior is familiar with his father’s networks and may easily tap into them and convert them into a formidable vehicle to victory.
But those who know him hope that he will climb down the ivory tower, shed the Mutula shade of pride, become less violent and more easy going so as to resonate with the voters in Makueni.
Violent?, Yes. This trait was evident the day his father died when he punched a reporter close to his late father after he found him among other journalists interviewing workers at the Maanzoni home. He has never apologized and the reporter let the matter die in view of the fact that he was along family friend who did not want to pull Junior into controversy at a time of deep mourning.
He may have to borrow the easy smiles of Kethi and their father even as they may have been meaningless to eat into the hearts of the voters.
Short of that, Junior may well make it to the Senate and probably do so only for the remaining term of his father and never more, for the excitement cause in Makueni by the Kethi debacle may be too overwhelming for whoever it is- Philip Kaloki of Jubilee, Jane Kitundu and the Boss John Harun Mwau.
Junior successfully presented his papers to the Makueni Returning Officer and was escorted by  battalion of Cord leaders to Wote. The election is scheduled  July 26. (See earlier stories elsewhere in this paper)
