By Liz Muthoka
The County Government of
Kitui has passed regulations to mitigate effects of Climate Change in the county,
the CEC for Environment and Natural Resources John makau revealed yesterday.
" I am happy today, that within the first year of Governor Charity Ngilu's administration the County Assembly was
able to pass the climate change fund regulations" he said.
He said that Kitui is
among the pioneer counties to have passed the climate change fund regulations
on June this year and reiterated the government’s commitment towards climate risk management by engaging residents in the
identification of climatic change based projects.
Speaking during the official launch of the second phase of the Climate Change Adaptation Consortium at Kenya Forest Research
Institute (KEFR) grounds, the minister said said the enactment
of the law has since advised the county government's move to set aside one
percent of its annual budget towards addressing climate change in the
country.
Makau also noted that his ministry is engaging rural communities for
training on how to make charcoal briquettes and also the making of
clean cooking jikos so as to reduce the rate of cutting trees for charcoal
burning and firewood.
Makau further urged Kitui residents to be on the forefront in addressing
climatic change matters among them tree planting. The second phase of the
adaptation consortium is working with 9 more wards in Kitui apart from the 10
wards it had earlier started with.
The initiative is meant to see vulnerable groups and the people of Kitui
have access to climate finance to build their resilience to the changing
climate in a more coordinated way.
