SEUCO in Machakos The Anchor June-July 2011

South Eastern University College
heralds a new dawn for Ukambani

South Eastern University College (SEUCO), a Public University College and the first to set foot in Ukambani is a successor to Ukamba Agricultural Institute (UKAI). UKAI started in the 1970s as one of the institutes established to harness the country’s skilled and semi-skilled human labour into productive development.

UKAI was elevated to the status of a University College on July 15,2008 through  Legal Notice No.102 Cap 210. It became SEUCO, a Constituent College of the University of Nairobi.
The University College is located in the South Eastern region of Kenya, about 170 kilometers from Nairobi and 38 kilometers West of Kitui town. The College is situated in a serene environment approximately 12 kilometers off Kwa-Vonza market, along the Machakos-Kitui Road. The Main Campus of SEUCO lies on a 10,000 acres piece of land. The University College also boasts of  about 4,900 acres of land at Emali and 1.5 acres of a prime plot in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area that it intends to develop in the near future as per the institution’s Strategic Plan for the period 2010-2020.

The establishment of SEUCO was aimed at transforming the lives of Kenyans in the Arid and Semi-arid Lands, and also have an impact nationally and globally by providing the required skill and educational opportunities for the increasing number of Kenyans seeking higher education. Through teaching, research, community service and extension services, SEUCO is set to contribute to national development and play a key role in influencing Government policy in key sectors of our economy.

The University College enrolled its first undergraduate students in May 2010 and its second group of JAB students in May 2011 into its various degree Programmes. The University College also has self sponsored (Parallel) students who have enrolled for the Module II Study Programmes. The current enrolment stands at about 900 students who are pursuing Certificate, Diploma, Bachelors and Masters Degree Courses. According to our Strategic Plan, it is expected that student numbers will constantly increase by almost 100 percent per year to about 6,000 in five years and 11,000 in ten years.

SEUCO’s Main Campus offers a diverse range of academic Programmes in her ten Schools. The Programmes range from Business, Education, Agriculture, Environment, Pure, Applied and Social Science based courses. There are close to thirty different Programmes being offered at the institution. The University College will continue to develop unique academic Programmes in line with its core mandate while existing Programmes will continually be reviewed to ensure quality and relevance.

Currently, the University College has three Campuses: Main, Kitui Town and Machakos Town Campuses. The Machakos Town Campus located in Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC) Building along Ngei Road is already admitting students in Bachelors of Commerce, Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Economics and Statistics, Education and Master of Business Administration among others. Several diploma and certificate courses are also on offer. Application forms are readily available at the Town Campus. The first semester of the 2011/2012 Academic Year will commence in July and the courses will be offered either:

(i)         During weekdays (Monday to Friday) 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and

(ii)         In the evenings (Monday to Friday) 5.30 – 8.30pm and Saturdays.

The Kitui Town Campus is in session and is offering similar degree courses to those advertised for Machakos Town Campus. We also have established a campus at Emali Town this year and as per our Strategic Plan, we shall eventually set up a City Campus on our property in Nairobi.

South Eastern University College is an asset not only to the nation but more so to the South Eastern Region as it has opened up the area and brought higher education closer to the people. We in SEUCO urge all secondary school leavers and working class people, to take advantage of this opportunity and enrol now in programmes of ‘your choice in order to enhance your academic knowledge and to meet your career aspirations’. Let SEUCO become your next destination in your academic voyage.
