Surprise treat for Kibwana
on his 64th birthday
Makueni governor Prof Kivutha Kibwana was on Wednesday treated to a rare birthday surprise by Kibwezi hawkers as he turned 64.
After a stormy meeting with the hawkers at a hotel in the town to address land grabbing complaints, the hawkers unexpectedly broke into a melody singing Happy Birthday to the governor.
The melody was preceded by a treat of 'chai' and mandazi at the hotel.
After the birthday melody, Prof Kibwana took a tour of the town to inspect allegedly grabbed land meant for public utilities, and to listen to the traders where even more surprise awaited him.
As he stopped in one of the clothes stalls to speak to a vendor, the hawkers who were trailing him quickly contributed cash and bought him a shirt while again breaking into happy birthday tunes.
Kibwana would later pose for photographs with the hawkers at the matatu terminus, where touts temporarily abandoned their 'Twende Twende' shouts to join the photo session.
