Storm brews over
sand harvesting

MAKUENI Sand Authority is under pressure to designate a sand harvesting site as residents resist sand harvesting in majority rivers .
Speaking to The Anchor, residents bordering river banks accuse the Makueni Sand Authority and the Makueni County Government of indulging in illegal sand harvesting.
The residents have vowed to defend by all means sand in rivers citing scarcity of water and failure of the Sand Authority to implement water conservation measures in those rivers .
Affected areas include Kiatine and Kaiti Villages in Wote along Kaiti River and Mbimbini , Kivanga villages in Mbooni East .
However Sand Authority director Daniel Kisee said they are in the process of rehabilitation rivers through conservation by planting trees, bamboo and building gabions .
