Bill and Melinda Gates
funds Makueni program
Nairobi: January 23, 2022
Makueni is among the selected counties that will benefit from a five-year program whose overall goal is to accelerate and scale quality Post-Partum Family Planning services within its Primary Health Care facilities.
According to Jhpiego Regional Director Paul Nyachae who spoke during its launch on Monday in Nairobi, the program will strengthen the capacity of the pilot counties to implement post-pregnancy services by ensuring that they are available, quality and accessible. Further, the experiences and lessons learned will be used to scale the program to the remaining counties in the country.
Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr led the County health team during the launch and observed that the program will help to address the unmet needs in the contraceptive services uptake that stands at 14% countrywide.
Previously, the county has made tremendous strides in the provision of family planning services. Makueni was among the first counties to allocate funds for FP services and commodities, with an allocation of Sh. 17 Million in the 2022/2023 financial year.
The program which will run up to September 2027 is funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and implemented in partnership with Jhpiego and other health development partners.
