Matungulu Deputy County Commissioner Evelyne Wekesa has said the region had recorded a 96 per cent transition rate on transition from Primary to secondary schools.
Speaking at Matungulu constituency's headquarters at Tala yesterday where area MP Stephen Mule dur issued bursaries students, Ms. Wekesa said no child should remain at home and fail to transition from primary school to secondary level. She said she has directed chiefs and their assistants, village elders and county administrators to combine efforts in seeking out those who had not reported to school so that the transition could be 100 per cent.
"At the moment we are at 96.48 per cent transition and I think Matungulu is leading in the county. The remaining bit is for chiefs, villagers and county administrators to check on whoever has not yet reported to school so that we achieve a hundred per cent transition,"Ms Wekesa said.
The official also warned parents in the region who fail to take their children to school despite the free primary and secondary education programme that they would be arrested and prosecuted. She stressed on the importance of education as a tool to address poverty and inequality in society.
Ms Wekesa also advised parents to ensure their children who did not qualify to join universities pursue technical training in tertiary colleges so as to gain skills that can help them in adult life. She said if the children were not assisted to be self-reliant in future they will end up becoming a burden to the society and may turn up against their own parents.
She observed that cases of children killing their parents as they sought to inherit their land were common and attributed this to lack of empowerment to the children to be able to acquire their own property.
Ms Wekesa said all children could not join universities but added that there were numerous career progression opportunities through tertiary colleges.
