The deal was inked in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the County Government of Kitui and the National Police Service that will guide the construction of the first four police stations spread across Endau Malalani, Mutha, Nguni and Ngomeni wards.

The MOU was signed by Kitui County Police Commander Ms. Leah Kithei and Kitui Chief Officer for Decentralized Units, SEKEB and Intergovernmental Relations Mr Stephen Saleh. The ceremony was witnessed by Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, Kitui County Commissioner Erastus Mbui, various stakeholders who included Members of the County Security and Intelligence Committee, Members of Kitui County Assembly, County Executive Committee Members and County Chief Officers.

The move to put up police stations along the borders with Tana River and Garissa counties is an attempt to realize lasting peace and protection citing the historical attacks and the recent pervasive unrests that have led to fatalities along the unsecured porous borders.
Scores of Kitui residents have in the past been killed by raiders who come from the north, with Kitui leaders having to keep on imploring their people not to make revenge attacks.
Speaking at the event, Governor Malombe said the move will boost the security of the people of Kitui, adding that his administration and the National Police Service are desirous of enhancing security within villages, locations, wards, sub-counties and county borders within the county through a joint cooperation.
"The conflicts we witness revolve pre-eminently around water and pasture, immigrant communities, grazing in protected areas, charcoal production, artisanal and small scale mining, theft of livestock and poaching", said the Governor.
Governor Malombe noted that insecurity derail the development agenda at both levels of government, adding that the two governments have keen interest in resolving conflict situations as envisaged in Article 189 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
He commended the County Assembly of Kitui for appropriating funds for the construction of the four police stations.
During his recent visit to Kitui President William Ruto, reacting to a request by local leadership, promised to operationalize the stations once they are complete.
